They searched around the country to find the \'perfect place\' to retire and both decided Egg Harbor was the most perfect place they could find. Herb will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He was known as the \'Birdman of Egg Harbor\' when he and his dear friend Duke Tegen began building bluebird houses and began placing some of them in meadows nearby. He built many bluebird houses for the Egg Harbor area. Being an accomplished cook, Herb loved to cook for family and friends. No matter where he lived throughout his life, Herb had a loyal and true friend in Lionel (Susan) Perkins of South Boston, Virginia. Herb was also a good sailor and loved reminiscing about his many wonderful escapades on the sailboats he had owned. He enjoyed sailing on his sailboat on Lake Michigan, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan with his special friends including John (Loretta) Murphy, Gus (Joyce) Murphy, and Fred (Betty) Murphy. He is survived by his dear wife, Maureen of Egg Harbor, WI; his aunts, Bonnie Kuchenbecker and Collette Wertel both of Green Bay, WI; cousins, Harland (Lillian) Kuchenbecker of Brillion,WI, Perry (Rosie) Sylvester of Crivitz, WI and Jerry (Karen) Sylvester of Marinette, WI; as well as many dear relatives, friends, neighbors and former business associates around the world. On August 31, 2010, Helgi Joen Joensen went home to be with his Lord and Saviour. It was his life here on earth that we proudly remember and celebrate. As a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Helgi left a tremendous impact on us all. He is predeceased by his parents Johannes and Mariane and his brothers Johannes and Hjalti as well as two infant children of his own. Born in Hvannasund, Faroe IS in 1933, Helgi grew up with three brothers and three sisters. By 1957 he immigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Calgary, working as a Danish trained Journeyman Cabinet Maker. He later responded to the call of the north and moved to Whitehorse, YT, where he met and later married Kathy Denning, spending the next 36 years growing a family which now includes two daughters Leslie (Andre), and Kristi and their respective grandchildren Natalie, Calysta and Daeden. After a heroic battle with cancer, Kathy succumbed and joined her Lord and Saviour. In 1995, Helgi married Mary den Engelsen and moved to Red Deer, AB. Leaving behind his career as the City of Whitehorse Carpenter, Helgi retired from his official working life and pursued his passions full time. As a result, his love of hunting, fishing, building, collecting guns, going to the cabin, helping his daughters, watching his grandkids and living life to the fullest became his new agenda. Together, Mary and Helgi were active in their church enjoying the fellowship of the believers. Those left to mourn this loss and look forward to a heavenly reunion include not only his immediate family but numerous friends and other family members as well. His step-family includes, Allison, John, Tom and Calvin Ireland, Rhonda, Rick, Ashley, Andrew, and Shane Bizarro, Carolyn, Ron, Beth, Clay and Chloe Geddert, Todd, Michelle, Meredith and Benjamin den Engelsen. The family would like to thank Dr. McIntyre, the staff at Unit #33 of the Red Deer Regional Hospital, and the Northcott Care Centre for their constant care and concern for Helgi.
