Friends and family will dearly miss Margie. Our mother was well known for her cheerful personality and great sense of humor. Her husband Jim predeceased her in 1996. Margie is survived by her daughters Gail, (Bob), and Ina, (David), her sons Patrick, (Vivian), Gordon (Theresa), and Douglas, (Teresa), her Grandchildren, April, Lucas, Kathleen, Jim, Daniel, Chris, Grace, William, Megan, and Thomas. Mom grew up in the dirty 30\'s on a farm near Ponoka. Our mother loved to sing with her two sisters Mildred and Marilee, and actually sang together as a group called the Mattern Trio. Unfortunately her beautiful voice wasn\'t passed on to her children. She loved nothing better than to sing along to old musicals and recordings from the 40\'s. After the War ended she worked as a Telephone operator in Whitehorse. There she met Jim Phelan who was working for Canadian National Telecommunications. They were married in June 15,1949 in Three Hills Alberta and then settled in their first home in Edmonton Alberta. Mom wasn\'t a stranger to change as our father was transferred to 5 different cities before the last of us kids left home. In 2001 she built a home with her son Doug (Teresa) in Blackie Alberta where she resided until her death. Our family would like to thank the staff at the Peter Lougheed, and High River Hospitals for their compassionate care. If so desired, a memorial donation may be made in Margie\'s name directly to the High River General Hospital (560- 9 Avenue West, High River, Alberta T1V 1B3) A Memorial Service will take place on Monday August 16th at 10:00 am in The Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home. After returning from the war, he worked on the farm of Bill & Nettie Ardley of Tees, Alberta, where he met and married his sweetheart, Ruth Ardley, on October 27, 1948. Fred, Ruth and infant Merrigold moved to a farm south of Stettler (northeast of Fenn) in 1950. In the next nine years, Miriam, Mark, Myra and Murray were born, and the five children all became Christians in their early years. Ruth passed away on October 13, 1986. Fred married Kathy Schmidt on July 2, 1988. Kathy passed away in 2009. Fred farmed for a few more years north of Stettler.

In later years, Fred was well cared for at the Stettler Willow Creek Lodge, Rimbey and Lacombe long-term care facilities, and due to increasing dementia, spent the last four years at the Ponoka Centennial Centre. He liked sharing his sense of humour with family, friends and neighbors. Fred enjoyed working on the farm, sports, dogs and especially music. He knew the words to hundreds of old songs and hymns. Fred was a life-long member of the Stettler Baptist Church. He accepted the Lord as his Savior at Prairie Bible Institute in the spring of 1948. In his last hours, he said he saw “both sides,” then he saw Jesus’ face. His final words were, “I’ll see you on the other side.” Fred’s memorial theme was “Going Home,” which symbolizes the end of a life of faith, pictured by one bird leaving the flock and “Going Home” to its everlasting reward.
