Jan grew up in Nanaimo, BC, graduating from Nanaimo Senior Secondary School in 1966. Jan is survived by her mother, Muriel, her brother, Kevin and his wife June, her children, Ja Lynn (and her husband Tim), Angela and Bruce, her grandchildren, Payton Muriel and Kianna Marie, her niece Alana and her Aunt Dolly. Particular thanks goes to Dr. John Corey, of Caulfield Village Medical Clinic, and the staff at Lions Gate General Hospital for their compassionate care during Jan\'s recent illnesses. Also, to Randall Godden and Mae\'s Graces (a group of Nanaimo \"girls\" who have been her friends for over fifty years ) for their unwavering friendship and support for Jan during difficult stretches in Jan\'s life. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service to celebrate her life, which will be held Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at 2pm at First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC. He leaves behind the love of his life, Sonja, with whom he spent over 20 years happily exploring life - travelling abroad, camping and boating, and fierce games of skip bo at the kitchen table. He is loved and missed by his children with first wife Liz: Bruce (Thuy), Heather (Dale), Patty, Jackie (Josh), and by Sonja’s children: Danny (Sam), Kane (Sharon) and Brenda (Brent). He is beloved Opa/Grandpa Bob to grandchildren Cassie (Rob), Allesha, Kara, Todd, Max, Cameron, Evan, Adrian, Angelica and Jason.
Anyone who knew our dad knew he was a man of stories and humour. He would tell us he was born at a very early age on a dark and stormy night (it was Halloween), and his first disappointment in life was that his mother would not let him go trick-or-treating.
He was born in Vancouver, and spent his early years on Digby Island, tricycling through a 17 room house. In 1943 his family came to Alert Bay, where his father was a wireless operator. In the 1960’s, Dad moved his wife and son to Port McNeill, where he started North Island Building Supply. Three daughters came after that. All the kids remember life above the yellow building supply store, with the only home-made, paint-decorated ice rink in town. He sold the business after 16 years, and became the public works foreman for the town of Port McNeill.
Over the years, dad served as alderman, volunteer firefighter, and as a regular at morning coffee with the boys. He was an integral part of the community, and always had a hand to lend, or a wise answer to a question asked.
He moved back to Alert Bay in 1988, continuing to do what he did best - fixing and building anything and everything, but his greatest joy was spending 23 years living happily with our step-mom Sonja. They were a wonderful complement to each other, and created a home of lively conversation and laughter, with family and friends always welcome. While we shed tears that he is gone, we smile because he lived.
You done good, Dad. We love you.
A special thank you to Dr. Ham, Judy-Lee, Judy and Molly for their wonderful care and support, and to the people of Alert Bay for all their kindness and support in our time of grief.
Celebration of life to be held September 11, 2010, 1pm at the Alert Bay Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations to the B.C. Lung Association appreciated.

Morgan (Slack), Erica Monday, 26 Jul 2010

North Island Gazette Port Hardy, BC

 			Erica Morgan (Slack)
July 26, 2010
Erica passed away peacefully at home July 26, 2010 after a courageous 2 1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. Together, they built a fantastic life settling in the community of Telegraph Cove, where Erik worked in the sawmill and eventually became part owner. As proud members of the community, he and Eva raised their family and enjoyed more than two decades in the Cove.
As the sawmill approached its inevitable end in 1979, Erik sold his interest and moved into Port McNeill, where he started a new enterprise as Erik’s Building Service. Erik’s adventurous spirit took him and Eva, and often the children, their spouses and grandchildren, on trips that left few items on his “bucket list” undone.
True to his Nordic roots, his great passion was his sailboat (Uli Kai), which gave him 30 years of enjoyment sailing the BC coast.
First and foremost, however, was Erik’s devotion to family for whom he was a phenomenal husband, father and “Bedstefar”, a proud patriarch and a great friend and mentor.
This humble but truly inspiring man will be missed by his family and multitude of friends but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Eva, by his sister Hanne in Canada, sister Ingrid in Denmark and brother Kund in Belgium; by his son Peter, daughters Anne Marie (Randy) and Lisa (Kurt) and grandchildren Curtis, Garrett, Lindsay, Sonya and Katrina. He craved any time he could spend with his extended family, especially when they visited his treasured oceanfront home on Beach Drive enjoying fires on the beach with his friends.
The family wishes to acknowledge the incredible staff of the BC Cancer Agency and Port McNeill and District Hospital for their care and kindness and Dr. Granger Avery for his compassionate service and friendship. Donations are gratefully encouraged to the BC Cancer Foundation (www.bccancerfoundation.com).
At Erik’s request, there will be no formal memorial service.

Shambrook, Jean Eleanor Friday, 09 Jul 2010

North Island Gazette Port Hardy, BC

 			Jean Eleanor Shambrook
(nee McFarlane)
August 18, 1935-July 9, 2010
With great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and wife.
