Haverstick on May 28, 1938 in Indianapolis. <br>He preceded her in death in 1961.   <br>She married Ara J. Wilkins on March 2, 1942, in Port Orchard.  <br>She preceded him in death in March 2010.  <br>He served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate first class from 1939 to 1960.  <br>He received the Purple Heart and 14 campaign bars with eight stars.  <br>After retiring from the Navy, he served as a custodian in California in the Coronado school system from 1960 to 1972.  <br>He attended the Baptist church while in Lousiana and the Palm City Assembly of God while in California.  <br>He enjoyed working on and restoring old cars.  <br>He is survived by daughters Linda Kay (and husband Mike) Tucker, of El Cajon, Calif., and Sharon Ann (and husband Jim) Deuel, of Sun City West, Ariz., and Allyn; brother William H. (and wife Jo) Voorhies, of El Dorado, Ariz.; sister Nancy B. Cuckler, of Hot Springs, S.D.; and grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.  <br>He was also preceded in death by son Donald Ray Voorhies; brother Chester Voorhies; and sister Mary B. Matz, of Port Orchard, died in Tacoma on July 15, 2010.  <br>He was 85. <br>He was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Bremerton to Oscar and Lillian (Cuney) Matz.   <br>He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1942.   <br>He began a four-year outside machinist apprenticeship at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1942 and was drafted in the U.S. Army in February 1943.   <br>He served as a cannonier in the 86th Black-Hawk Infantry Division.  His division was involved in battles of the Ruhr Pocket and the Rhine River and later in the Philippines. <br>Following his discharge, he completed his apprenticeship as a marine machinist and worked his way up to shop Planner, scheduler-analyst and finally planner and estimator (machinist marine).  <br>He retired in 1990. <br>He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2669 and its honor guard team as the post bugler; American Legion Post 149; Bremerton Valley of the Scottish Rite Mason Lodge; William H. Upton naval Military No. 206; National Association of Federal Employees; and the American Association of Retired Persons.   <br>He was a member of the Kitsap County Shrine Club & Nile Center, serving as potentate and earning its Merit Award.
