Hannah was born on August 1, 1998, the youngest child with three older brothers. She lived her entire life on Bainbridge Island with her family and her beloved dogs and cats. With her sweet, kind, fun nature, and beautiful smile, Hannah loved her friends as much as she loved her family. Many girls regarded Hannah as their “best friend”.
Prior to her illness, Hannah was very active in dance, soccer, tennis and all things having to do with friends. While the last three years of her life were more limited due to intensive treatment, she continued to love movies, music, games, yoga and dance, and spending time with friends. Hannah also loved school and was an excellent student at Montessori Country School, Wilkes Elementary, and Sakai Intermediate School where she completed the 6th grade.
As her cousin said, Hannah “fought harder and lived more fully than many people do in their entire lives.” Another friend said, “Hannah absolutely loved life and knew how to make the best of things.” Just as Hannah was an inspiration to so many, we are grateful to the support our family received throughout her illness.
Hannah was a gift and a blessing to her family and to all who knew her, touching others with her hope, her courage and her love. Hannah’s bright warrior spirit did not lose the battle, but rather helped teach others how to love and how to care for each other. We miss her dearly but will forever hold her in our hearts.
Hannah is survived by her father, Bill Hunt, her mother Reba Ferguson, her brothers Andrew and Ryan Hunt, as well as Adam (and Alexis) Hunt of NYC. Her Aunt Linda Ferguson, cousins Caroline, Annie and Chris Ferguson of Bainbridge Island, and Uncle Claude Ferguson; Uncles Rick, Dave, and Stephen Hunt and families of California; and Great Aunt Ruth and Uncle Dewey Mann and families in WV. Hannah was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Vincent and Ann Hunt of Lodi, CA and maternal grandparents, Jim and Reba Ferguson of Cincinnati, OH.
A celebration of Hannah’s life will take place on September 12, 2010 at 6 pm at Grace Church on Bainbridge Island. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hannah’s memory may be made to the Olson Lab Research Fund at Seattle Children’s Hospital, PO Box 5371, Seattle, WA 98145 or http://secure.seattlechildrens.org.

TRIBUTE Paid Notice

Grant, Michael Arthur Saturday, 28 Aug 2010

Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA

 Michael Arthur Grant
Michael Arthur Grant died suddenly Aug. 28 on the summit of Mt. his daughter Odile Dumbleton of Bainbridge Island, Washington; his ex-wife Jeanne Boyd and her husband John Boyd of Sun City West, Arizona; his sister Elizabeth Burleigh and her husband Sheridan Burleigh of Ticonderoga, New York; his cousin Jane List of Anderson, South Carolina; his final rat, Phooey of Bainbridge; and his adopted cat Claude, of Bainbridge. Pete was predeceased by his parents Harry Dumbleton and Edna Gillen Dumbleton of Leonia, New York, who died in 1984 and 1986, respectively, and his brother William and wife Jeannie of Essex Junction, Vermont, who died May 26, 2007.
A memorial will be held in the Fall at Pete’s home on Winslow Way West on Bainbridge Island for nearby friends and family to celebrate his life, and another memorial will take place next Summer at the cottage on Lake George. Pete requested that his ashes be scattered at Lake George. For information call Odile Dumbleton at 917-202-7722 or Keith Dumbleton at 773-227-5864.
Pete requested that no flowers be sent, but that anyone wishing to commemorate his life could make a donation to the Oral Cancer Foundation, at http://oralcancerfoundation.org/ or a public library or charity of their own choice.
Pete’s family would like to thank all of the people who knew and helped him through so many good years and so many rough years, only a few of whom can be listed here. Bob Mack has been here for him through it all, helping both Pete and his family, truly playing the part of a brother. The members of the Oral Cancer Foundation’s survivor/patient forum have been a huge source of companionship and information for Pete, providing a community where he could share the difficulties of his battle with cancer and providing him with a type of support and empathy that not even family can offer. The Fiberglass RV online group has been a wonderful and caring community for him through his many years on the road and then off. The staff at Island Health and Rehabilitation on Bainbridge has done a wonderful job caring for him through his final days, making sure that he was comfortable and peaceful and ended his life with the dignity and sense of humor he carried through it.
“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” John A. She was 55 years old and had lived on Bainbridge Island since 1984. Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Karen was one of five children growing up in northern New Mexico. She graduated from Santa Fe Prep School in 1972 and attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine graduating with a B.A. in Spanish in 1976. There she met her future partner and husband, Jonathan (Joth) Davis. They were married in June 1980 in Santa Fe and lived on Fishers Island, New York prior to together pursuing graduate school, Karen attaining an MBA from the University of Connecticut in 1981. They lived for a year in New Haven, Connecticut where Karen helped manage a US Senatorial campaign before Karen and Joth set out for New Zealand, traveling and living in the south Pacific for a time. They moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1983, lived a year in Seattle before moving to Bainbridge Island where for the next twenty-six years they lived a wonderful life. Karen initially poured her energy into their home and growing family over the next ten years. Justin Putnam Davis was born in March 1985 followed by Hannah Melin Davis and Caleb Muir Davis born in March 1987 and September 1989, respectively. Karen remained a dedicated and passionate mom her entire life.
Karen’s children and partnership with her husband were her heart and soul, but she also pursued her own interests, and remained active within the community. She returned to a professional career in mediation training in 1991, working with and attaining a partnership with the Sound Options Mediation Training Group in 1995. Karen’s professional focus was providing mediation and training for school districts over services provided by the State of Washington to children with special needs. She also served for some years on the board of the Kitsap County Dispute Resolution Center. In recent years, Karen was increasingly passionate about creating better opportunities to promote civil discourse among young people. Her expertise was focused on helping people listen and resolve differences by turning difficult conversations into opportunities for productive dialog.
Karen is survived by her husband and three children of Bainbridge Island, and her parents, Lee and Donna Brown, her sister, Leslie Shipman and her brothers, Mark, Merritt and Peter Brown all of Santa Fe. She is also survived by 17 beloved nieces and nephews on both sides of her family. Karen was predeceased by her sister-in-in law, Randi Brown and her beloved nephew, Jensen Brown.
Karen lived her life with passion, integrity and that rare ability to inspire the best from those around her. She was a wonderful, kind friend to many people, whether here on Bainbridge Island or on Cuttyhunk Island in Massachusetts, where she vacationed annually during summers with her family. Karen loved her native northern New Mexico and coastal eastern Maine where times spent with extended family were annual highlights. Karen loved to read, garden and spend time with friends. She loved intelligent discourse, telling stories, walking with close friends, and weekend sailing and hikes with her husband. A remembrance of Karen’s life was held on the beach in Port Madison on Bainbridge Island on Friday, August 20th. The event was blessed by a quiet, beautiful evening, a spectacular sunset and stories honoring Karen’s life. The evening overflowed with love and support from the community of family and friends that had gathered. Karen’s commitment to family and friendships, her authenticity, her constant bright smile, warm humor and honesty inspired others around her. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Charitable contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.nationalmssociety.org.) and the Bainbridge Community Foundation
(www. bainbridgecommunityfoundation.org).
A photo documentation of Karen’s life, as well as August 20th’s celebration of her memory can be found at:
http://gallery.me.com/cdufly#100301&bgcolor=black&view=grid

TRIBUTE Paid Notice

Susumi, Yvette Sunday, 08 Aug 2010

Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA

 Yvette Susumi
December 21, 1928 - August 8, 2010

Yvette Susumi, passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at The Wyatt House on Bainbridge Island, Washington at 81 years of age.
She was born on December 21, 1928 in Ecueille, a small town in France, to Maurice Gauvain and Juliette Trouve where she was raised on a farm. A larger-than-life, generous soul, he is remembered and mourned by legions of family, extended family, and dear friends.
Glen was born in Seattle on March 31, 1925, the second of four children of Ellis and Irene Moehring, and grew up in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood. He left Roosevelt High School early to serve his country during World War II, first in the U.S. Army’s ski troops, then in Burma with the O.S.S., until the war’s end. Glen returned to Seattle and attended the University of Washington, where he studied poetry under Theodore Roethke and from which he graduated in 1949 with a degree in English Literature.
Glen met his wife-to-be, Jean Ridley Clark, while both were students at the UW, and they embarked on their 63-year marriage after a four-month courtship. Glen taught high-school English and tutored students in Russian and Chinese during a long, distinguished career. He was a gifted singer, with a rich, rolling bass voice, and sang over the years for the Seattle Peace Chorus (with whom he twice toured in the former Soviet Union), the Seattle Bach Choir, and the Bainbridge Chorale.
A tireless advocate for peace, outdoor enthusiast, cook, cultivator of rhododendrons, and lifelong student of philosophical questions, he shared his interests and passions with countless devotees over the course of his life. Glen also wrote prodigiously, and leaves behind an impressive collection of poetry, plays, essays, and libretti. He derived the greatest pleasure in his later life from the company of his grandchildren, “living vicariously,” as he liked to put it, through their adventures and accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Moehring, his daughters Karen Hart (Stephen) and Anne Moody (Fred), his grandchildren Jerry, Carmen, David, Robbie, Erin, Caitlin and Jocelyn, and his great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service is planned; memorial donations in Glen’s name should be sent to the charity of your choice.

TRIBUTE Paid Notice

 Kowalski, Jerome V. Thursday, 05 Aug 2010

Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA

 Jerome (Jerry) Vincent Kowalski
June 3, 1925 - August 5, 2010

Jerry Kowalski passed away at his home on Bainbridge Island surrounded by his family of six children, their spouses, his good friend and former wife, Barbara Kowalski, and his devoted dog, Zorro.
